Preventing genocide and protecting the innocent from persecution and obliviation is built into the genetic code of American's. We sometimes can't help but want to pick-up arms to protect them.
We also look at the long term ramifications of our actions (or inactions) in the context of how it will affect the security of the United States of America (i.e.; WW1, WW2)
